Investigating Nitrate with Other Constituents in Groundwater in Two Contrasting Tropical Highland Watersheds

چکیده
Nitrate is globally the most widespread and widely studied groundwater contaminant. However, few studies have been conducted in sub-Saharan Africa, where leaching potential enhanced during rainy monsoon phase. The monitoring found concentrations over drinking water standards of 10 mg N-NO3− L−1 groundwater, primary supply rural communities. Studies on nitrate movement are limited to volcanic Ethiopian highlands. Therefore, this study aimed evaluate transport fate identify processes that control concentrations. Water table height, nitrate, chloride, ammonium, reduced iron, three other constituents were determined monthly 30 wells two contrasting watersheds years first watershed was Dangishta, with lava intrusion dikes blocked subsurface flow valley bottom. remained within 3 m surface. second without barriers Robit Bata. dropped rapidly months end rain phase disappeared except near faults. average concentration both between 4 5 L−1. Hydrogeology influenced nitrogen. In by dikes, residence time aquifer larger than Consequently, high (in several wells, L−1) decreased slowly due denitrification. Mercury in the Soil of Two Contrasting Watersheds in the Eastern United States
Soil represents the largest store of mercury (Hg) in terrestrial ecosystems, and further study of the factors associated with soil Hg storage is needed to address concerns about the magnitude and persistence of global environmental Hg bioaccumulation. To address this need, we compared total Hg and methyl Hg concentrations and stores in the soil of different landscapes in two watersheds in diffe...
متن کاملLeaf physiological traits and its relation with sugar beet cultivar success in two contrasting environments
The aim of this study was to identify leaf physiological traits, which could be used in selecting high yielding genotypes among 12 sugar beet cultivars grown in two contrasting pedo-climatic environments. In the stressful Site 1 (high temperatures, low rainfall, heavy-textured soil), high yielders had cooler leaves (lower ΔT) and thus, transpired (E) and photosynthesized (A) more. Also, these c...
متن کاملFood web structure and mercury transfer in two contrasting Ugandan highland crater lakes (East Africa)
Volcanic crater lakes scattered throughout western Uganda are important local sources of water and fish. Two representative but contrasting crater lakes near the Kibale National Park were sampled in 2000; the hyper-eutrophic Lake Saka, which is highly affected by agricultural practices, and the mesotrophic Lake Nkuruba that is still surrounded by intact forest. The food web structures in these ...
متن کاملSurface-Soil Properties and Water Contents across Two Watersheds with Contrasting Tillage Histories
Soil properties and water contents (u) vary spatially, but management effects on spatial patterns are poorly understood. This study’s objective was to compare surface-soil properties and u in two small watersheds (30–43 ha) in Iowa’s loess hills. Both watersheds were in continuous corn (Zea mays L.) from 1972 through 1995, one (CW1) under conventional tillage and the other (RW3) under ridge til...
